HE can sing the blues, but it's going green that he cares about.
By Teh Jen Lee
11 April 2008

HE can sing the blues, but it's going green that he cares about.

Asian Idol Hady Mirza reuses his shoe boxes to keep fan mail and small things like key chains and accessories.

He also knows that old newspapers are good for cleaning mirrors and window panes.

While it is difficult for him to take public transport like the MRT because of his tight schedule, he shares his family car with his sister instead of getting his own car.

'When I was young, I wanted to be one of the five ringbearers in the cartoon Captain Planet. Working in a team is important,' he said.

Captain Planet is a cartoon super hero who fights to save the planet from environmental problems.

Hady will be doing his bit to save the earth by being part of a team of celebrities who will spread the green message at the 2008 Clean and Green Singapore Youth Eco Concert on 19 April.

They include Project Superstar 2 champion Daren Tan, Project Superstar runner-up Kelly Poon, Campus Superstar 2 winner Shawn Tok, Vasantham Star's Ebi Shankara, and Suria's Anugerah champion for last year, Aliff Aziz.

ANYTHING RECYCLABLE

The outdoor concert, hosted by MediaCorp artistes Bryan Wong and Michelle Chia, aims to gather 5,000 youths to celebrate youth efforts in caring for the environment.

It will also educate people about living an environmentally-friendly lifestyle.

To attend the concert, take along an empty drink can, some old newspapers or anything recyclable to act as a ticket.

This is the second year that Hady is involved in this concert, organised by the National Environment Agency (NEA).

The self-professed greenie keeps abreast of environmental news through television and cable channels.

He said: 'I see what's going on around the world. The US is having severe storms due to global warming. The ice caps are breaking and getting smaller. These are definite signs of climate change.'

In Singapore, he has noticed that the weather is getting more unpredictable.

One minute it's hot, the next minute it's pouring, he said.

'I watch a lot of Animal Planet and National Geographic which showcase animals. Tigers and bears being killed for medicinal purposes.

'What's disturbing is the killing of baby seals, they just get clobbered on the head.

'It's disturbing because the seals are so defenceless - all this just so someone somewhere can use them for fashion.'

UNDERSTANDING THE ISSUES

Besides watching TV, he also reads the newspapers and surfs the Internet to understand more about issues such as logging and deforestation in the Amazon forest in Brazil.

'That's the world's largest rainforest, so it will definitely affect the climate,' said Hady.

'At the end of the day, the main reason for global warming is human activities, so the solution lies with us.

'No one is going to help us. The Earth is all we have, we can't go to Mars yet so it depends on us whether future generations will enjoy the world that we live in.'

One young person who is glad that Hady is such a greenie is Mr Ramanathan Thurairajoo, 26, an undergraduate, who helped out at last year's concert.

He was encouraged to see other young people bring recyclables by the bag-fulls last year.

He said: 'I wasn't expecting a lot of youths to come with things to recycle, but they did. This is the right attitude towards practising the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) as part of a sustainable lifestyle.

'Conveying the environmental message to youths is not easy because the topic may not be as hot as fashion, games and travelling.

'But they are the ones who are going to take over in the future, so it's good to see changes in them.'

YEPPPPS THAT;S THE THING ONCE AGAIN IT'S THE RECYCLABLE THING LARHHH BRING ONE THING TO GO RECYCLE THEN YOU'LL GET FREE ADMISSION BUT YEPPPS I WONDER WHAT THEY'LL DO THERE AS IN YEPPS IT'S GOOD TO BRING IN STARS AND BLAH BLAH FOR PUBLICITY BUT WHAT WILL THEY ACTUALLY DO THERE NOT LIKE THEY CAN SING SOME HUAN BAO SONG RIGHT HMMM HMMM MAYBE THEY'LL BUT STILL IS THIS KIND OF PROGRAMME LIKE EFFECTIVE IN GETTING ACROSS THE IMPORTANCE OF HUAN BAO OR MAYBE THEY'RE JUST GOING FOR THE SAKE OF THE STARS AND SUCH BUT YEAHHH YOU KNOW AT LEAST THE GVT'S DOING STH YEPPPPS GOOD START BAHHHH (:

solar energy - alternative?

HELLO PEOPLE! (: this is eyu!
happened to find this bit of interesting article on omy.sg:

yepps this is the article on omy. original article can be found on http://www.omy.sg/news/hotnews/200803/20080327_1213.html, take a look if you want! ;)
so...according to the article, solar energey is plentiful in singapore, so we should use it right? this is a very efficient way to conserve (reduce) fuel that are irreversible, and making use of the sun's power is very environmentally friendly! so any views on this? =DD
apparently, when rouying and i were in china for the immersion trip, we noticed that china has a lot of houses with the solar panel attached to them. We found this situation very commonly and so we asked our guide about it. He said that solar panels are expensive, but i forgot what he said after that -- oops! im sorry! rouying you are doing the collation of interviews! what did he say? ahhah.
umns yeah, so looking at this particular issue, i think that singapore can do much better! why not try to be like china and make complete use of the solar energy? it may be expensive but singapore certainly is not poor either -- so it would be good if singapore did so right? (:

give us your views! thanks!

rising prices of paper

wahahhaha here i am again (((:

and yepps everyone knows that prices have been rising now including paper also so i was thinking does this have any link to the environment?

kayyy actually i don;'t really know the reason behind the rising costs of paper (yepps cos i don't read the news i'm so sorry) but yeppps someone who knows please enlighten me

and i was wondering if the rising of the costs of paper have anything to do with huan bao hmmm and the news today was like saying those karang guni man (if i'm not mistaken) are earning lesser cos less people will sell their unwanted things to them even though they will receive more money for the same amount of stuff they sell cos now people prefer to sell them in bulk to some company or what (ohh kayy actually i don't really understand ohh kayyy so i might sound incoherent and some parts might be wrong so people enlighten me bahhhh )

and yeppps everything are so mind boggling hmmm i was wondering if recycled products are cheaper if it's cheaper will more people buy it ohh kayyy if the new products made from new paper are more expensive maybe the people will choose to buy recycled products instead

but come to think of it we as teenagers will we even care whether that thing is cheaper we only go for the visual appeal of it bahhh i suppose

hmmm hmmm think think ponder ponder

AND YEPPS THANKS TO FELLOW LUN WEN-ERS WHO LOOKED OUT FOR US FOR MORE ARTICLES OR NEWS ABOUT HUAN BAO XIE XIE

and i must admit there's been a lot of it in spore i heard it on the news and since i don't have newspapers whahaha eyu you should get what i mean horhhhhh but i suppose we can find it on the net de so JIAYOU BAHHH yayyyy whahahh i don;t really like doing research blah blah so eyu hurhhh hurhhhh xie xie ni larhhh

ohh kayyyy i do feel a little guilty for pushing everything to eyu larhhh whahaha ohhh kayyy a little lala

ohhh yepps see this time i have improved ohh kayyy lesser typos lalala

this is eyu (:
we are at NYGH's computer lab 2 now, IH lesson =DD

hahah, dont accuse us of illegal web surfing, but very fortunately we are currently learning the chapter ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION.

so, we are here to do background research and also (haha) 乘机 do some research for our lunwen, since its related!

anyway, a recent activity in Singapore relating to the 3Rs is participating in Earth Hour. 60 minutes of lightings off! I wonder how many people really did that... anyway, our school's green club introduced us to this activity, raising awareness on reducing eletricity use. yay jiayoujiayou we shall save energy together wahahahahahahhaaaa

oh, a website i have just found : http://www.3rkh.net/3rkh/mri/Singapore.htm
you can visit this link to see some of Singapore's policies on environment. yay its lunch now! ((:

hahah okay but we completed our short reflections for BSP scholars on think.com. we are going to upload it sometimes!

the renovation of this blog is still in progress! we strive to acheive higher standards wahhaha!

first post here by eyu!

hello this is eyu!
sadly i wanted to post only after we have gotten userpics and such, but we are all very busy lately and so i think the decoration of this journal shall be pushed back. awww! okay this post is supposed to be some sort of official as compared to rouying's post... so,
*ahem*

to all out there viewing this journal currently, we are two very random and highh girl students from Singapore's Nanyang Girls' High School!  Since we are BSP scholars, we get to go to China and English countries for immersions for these three years. We have already been to Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Shaoxin, Ningbo, Ningbo (Zhenghai) and Shanghai in China last year from October 21st to December 1st. (Hhaha why am i so specific?!)

Anyway, when we were in China, we have to conduct a research based on a research question we came up with before we went to China, and after that we have to write out a report (lunwen, which is why this blog is called ourlunwen.livejournal) for a BSP seminar next year. This year, we are going to China again and finalise our report.

SO. rouying has very kindly randomly deicded to create a livejournal for us to update our actions and progress on our lunwen. okay this is a bit tad lame but i guess after the lunwen ends we can use this as our friends contacting blog hahah too bad the name is stuck as ourlunwen! yepps anyway, updates:

we have successfully given out ALL 200 surveys, and none are void because we inspected each and every survey! (: 100 in China, 100 in Singapore. WHAT A RELIEF ITS FINALLY OVER. hahah we were rushing and having headaches about surveys in Singapore because we didnt want biased results (we are in girls school!). yepps so thats finally over.

Also, the collation of China surveys are already complete, pie charts are all drawn out and now i have to do the Singapore ones . HAIZ.
this is really puking blood because those who collated surveys before know how difficult it is flipping through 200 pieces of paper and recording the results so many time -.- and our survey is two pages long! hahah but rouying is doing interviews whhaah. jiayoujiayou! this is such a long post!

OH. BY THE WAY, OUR LUNWEN TOPIC IS ON COMPARING CHINA AND SINGAPORE'S TEENS KNOWLEDGE AND ACTIONS ON THE 3Rs: RECYCLE, REUSE AND REDUCE.

because i have no time and need to finish my chinese literature report, i have to end here first and i shall upload photos of BSP scholars in China sometime later, as well as some of our lunwen findings (: AND i promise i shall make this journal look so much better.
SO. we will explain more of our lunwen in more posts and feel free to post any questions/comments/improvements for us in the comments box, thank you so much!

P.S: WE ARE OF 15 GOING ON TO 16 YEARS OLD. MWACKS WE LOVE YOU ;)
love,
eyu!

and spore collects plastics not for them to be recycled lehhh they don't have the technology to do so according to one of our interviewees and plus plastics cannot be melted like metals
